Premium is mandatory and it is not free, so the first question is not what you earn - it is whether you clear what you pay.

You meet the three published requirements for Creator Revenue Sharing.

A range, not a promise. X publishes no rate card, so these bands come from publicly reported creator payouts. How this is calculated.

The program has a subscription attached to it

An active paid X Premium subscription is a hard requirement for Creator Revenue Sharing. It costs around eight dollars a month on the standard tier as of September 2026, varying by country and by whether you pay annually. Without it you accumulate no payable balance at all, however much reach you have.

That inverts the usual way people approach a payout calculator. For a large account the subscription cost is a rounding error. For most accounts it is the entire question: monetization is a net cost until the estimated payout clears it, and a meaningful share of newly eligible creators never get past that line.

The calculator flags this directly. When the modelled payout falls below the subscription cost, the result is telling you that joining the program would currently lose you money - which is useful information, and not something a calculator designed to produce exciting numbers would tell you.

How many impressions break even

Break-even is the subscription cost divided by your effective rate per million. At the $12 per million mid band for an American audience, eight dollars needs roughly 670K impressions a month. In a Premium-dense US niche, where the rate reaches $32, it needs about 250K.

At the other end the arithmetic turns hostile. On the $4.50 per million mid band for a mixed worldwide audience, break-even is roughly 1.8M impressions a month. On the $1.80 band for an audience concentrated in emerging markets it is around 4.4M - close to the entire 90-day eligibility threshold, every month, just to cover the subscription.

There is a second cost most break-even calculations miss. Payouts are only released once your accrued balance clears the program's minimum threshold, recently around ten dollars, and balances below it roll forward to the next cycle. So an account earning three dollars a month is paying the subscription every month while being paid once a quarter, and the cash-flow gap is wider than the annual arithmetic suggests.

This is the clearest demonstration of why geography dominates this model. The same effort, the same posting schedule and the same reach can be comfortably profitable or persistently loss-making depending on nothing more than where the audience happens to live.

What to do if you are below the line

Do not buy the subscription yet. Eligibility requires it, but nothing stops you building reach first and subscribing once the impressions are there. Paying for twelve months while you grow toward the threshold is twelve months of guaranteed cost against no payable balance.

Weigh the other things Premium buys you. Longer posts, edit access, reply ranking and the algorithmic boost have value independent of payouts, and reply ranking in particular can compound reach. If you would pay for those anyway, the break-even question becomes much less pointed.

And consider whether payouts are the right goal at all. For most accounts below the threshold, the other routes X offers - subscriptions, tips, and simply using the reach to sell something of your own - clear more than Creator Revenue Sharing does at the same audience size.

Frequently asked questions

How many impressions do I need to cover the cost of X Premium?
Roughly 670K a month at the mid band for an American audience, and around 1.8M for a mixed worldwide one, as of September 2026. In a Premium-dense US niche it can be as low as 250K.
Do I have to pay for X Premium to get paid?
Yes. An active paid Premium or Premium+ subscription is a requirement of Creator Revenue Sharing, alongside the follower and impressions thresholds. There is no free route into the program.
Should I subscribe before I am eligible?
Only if you want Premium's other features. The subscription does not accelerate the impressions threshold, so subscribing early is a cost against no payable balance. Build the reach first, then subscribe.
Does Premium+ pay more than Premium?
The higher tier costs more and removes ads from your own feed, but the payout mechanism is the same: you are paid on engagement from Premium subscribers who see your posts, not on which tier you personally pay for.
