How Much Do Small Accounts Actually Earn on X?

Real reported payouts for accounts between 1,000 and 100,000 followers, and the honest maths on whether X monetization covers the cost of Premium.

Most accounts under 10,000 followers earn between $10 and $100 a month from X Creator Revenue Sharing — and a large share of them earn nothing at all, because they never reach the 5 million impression threshold in the first place.

This article is the number nobody puts in a headline, because it is not exciting.

What small accounts actually report

Aggregating publicly posted payout screenshots, the picture looks like this:

Followers Typical monthly impressions Typical monthly payout
Under 1,000 Under 100,000 $0 — usually not eligible
1,000 – 5,000 100,000 – 700,000 $0 – $15, often below the payout threshold
5,000 – 20,000 500,000 – 3M $5 – $60
20,000 – 50,000 2M – 10M $30 – $250
50,000 – 100,000 5M – 25M $80 – $600

The ranges overlap heavily because follower count is a weak predictor. Two accounts with 20,000 followers can differ tenfold in both impressions and rate.

The Premium break-even

Here is the calculation most guides avoid.

X Premium costs roughly $8 a month. To break even on the subscription at a typical global rate of $2 per million impressions, you need 4 million impressions a month — which is nearly the entire eligibility threshold, every month, just to cover the fee.

At a US-heavy, Premium-dense $8 per million, break-even is around 1 million impressions a month, which is much more achievable.

So the answer to "is it worth subscribing for the monetization" depends almost entirely on your audience:

  • US-heavy, finance/tech/crypto/politics niche: break-even around 1M impressions/month. Realistic for a 10,000-follower account posting daily.
  • Global, general-interest audience: break-even around 4M impressions/month. Realistic somewhere north of 30,000 followers posting several times a day.

If you are subscribing to Premium purely to get paid, and you are in the second group with under 30,000 followers, the honest answer is that you will likely lose money on the trade for a while.

Run your own break-even with the calculator — it shows the range against your actual impressions rather than a follower rule of thumb.

Why follower count predicts so little

Three accounts, all with 15,000 followers:

  • Account A posts twice a day, mostly text, audience in India and Southeast Asia. Roughly 600,000 impressions a month at maybe $0.80 per million. About $0.50 a month. Never clears the payout threshold.
  • Account B posts eight times a day including heavy replies under large US tech accounts. Roughly 4 million impressions a month at maybe $4 per million. About $16 a month.
  • Account C had one post reach 12 million views this month. Roughly 14 million impressions at $3 per million. About $42 this month, then back to $5 next month.

Same follower count. Eighty-fold difference. This is why per-follower rules of thumb are useless and why this site estimates from impressions and audience composition instead.

What small accounts should take from this

The revenue share is not an income. At small scale it is a rebate on your Premium subscription. Treat it that way and the disappointment goes away.

Impressions are the lever, not followers. Replying under large accounts in your niche is the fastest route to the threshold, and it compounds into followers as a side effect.

Audience composition compounds. Building an audience in a Premium-dense niche raises your rate permanently. This is a far bigger lever than posting more.

The real money is off-platform. Every creator earning meaningfully from X is using it to sell something — a product, a newsletter, consulting, a course. The payout is a subsidy for building that audience, not the business itself.

When it starts to matter

Revenue sharing becomes a real line of income somewhere around 10 to 20 million impressions a month, which in practice means 50,000+ engaged followers posting at volume, or a smaller account with unusually high reply reach.

Below that, it buys coffee. See how much X pays per million impressions for the rate bands, or the leaderboard for what the top of the platform looks like.

FAQ

How much can a small X account earn?

Accounts between 1,000 and 10,000 followers typically report $0 to $100 a month, and many earn nothing because they never reach the 5 million impression eligibility threshold.

How much does a 10k follower account make on X?

Commonly $5 to $60 a month, depending almost entirely on posting volume and audience geography. An account posting twice a day to a global audience may make under $5; one posting heavily into a US tech niche can make several times that.

Is X Premium worth it for a small creator?

Only if you can generate roughly 1 million impressions a month with a US-heavy, Premium-dense audience, or 4 million with a general global audience. Below that you pay more in subscription fees than you receive in payouts.

Why do I have impressions but no earnings?

Most likely you have not met all three eligibility criteria, or your balance has not yet reached the minimum payout threshold. Earnings accrue but are not released until the threshold clears.

What is the fastest way for a small account to earn more?

Increase impressions through replies under large accounts in your niche, and concentrate on a niche whose audience contains more paying Premium subscribers. The second lever raises your rate permanently.
