Is X Premium Worth It for Creators? The Break-Even Maths

X Premium costs about $8 a month and is mandatory for payouts. Here is exactly how many impressions you need to break even, by audience type.

X Premium costs roughly $8 a month and is mandatory for Creator Revenue Sharing. To break even on the subscription alone you need around 1 million impressions a month with a US-heavy audience, or around 4 million with a general global audience.

If you are subscribing purely to get paid, those two numbers decide the question.

The break-even table

At $8 a month, the impressions required to cover the subscription:

Your audience Effective rate per 1M impressions Impressions needed to break even
US-heavy, Premium-dense niche (crypto, finance, AI, US politics) $6 – $10 0.8M – 1.3M / month
US or Western, general interest $2 – $5 1.6M – 4M / month
Mixed global audience $1 – $2 4M – 8M / month
Mostly South Asia, LATAM, SEA, Africa $0.3 – $1 8M – 27M / month

Note the bottom row. A creator with a large but low-CPM audience can be well past the eligibility threshold and still lose money on the subscription. This is rarely mentioned in guides aimed at those markets.

But break-even is the wrong question

Treating Premium purely as a cost against payouts misses most of what you are buying. The subscription also gets you:

  • Reach amplification. Premium posts are boosted in ranking. For an account trying to reach the 5 million impression threshold, this is not a small effect — it is the mechanism by which you get there.
  • Longer posts and video uploads. Formats that hold attention, which is what the payout is calculated on.
  • Edit button, bookmarking, analytics depth and the rest of the feature set.
  • The ability to be in the program at all. Without the subscription there is no revenue share, no matter how large you are.

So the real calculation is not "does $8 of payout come back". It is "does the reach boost, format access and payout eligibility together justify $96 a year against what I am trying to build".

When it is clearly worth it

  • You are above about 2 million impressions a month in a US-heavy niche. The payout alone covers it and the reach boost accelerates everything else.
  • You sell something. If X drives even one $50 customer a month to a newsletter, product or consulting practice, the subscription is trivially justified and the payout is irrelevant.
  • You are actively growing toward the threshold. The reach amplification is a growth tool, not just a monetization gate.

When it is clearly not

  • You post occasionally and do not sell anything. You will pay $96 a year to receive maybe $10.
  • Your audience is concentrated in low-CPM regions and you are under roughly 10 million impressions a month. The arithmetic simply does not work at those rates.
  • You are buying it in the hope that monetization is a business. For almost everyone, revenue sharing is a rebate, not an income. See how much small accounts actually earn.

Premium vs Premium+

Premium+ costs meaningfully more and has generally been weighted more favourably in payout calculations, though X does not publish the exact difference. Reports from creators suggest the uplift is real but not dramatic.

The honest guidance: upgrade to Premium+ when your basic-tier payouts are already comfortably exceeding the higher subscription cost, not before. Upgrading in the hope of triggering higher earnings at low volume is a losing trade.

The annual billing angle

Annual billing reduces the effective monthly cost noticeably. If you have already decided to subscribe for a year of growth, paying annually lowers every break-even figure in the table above by roughly 10% to 15%.

FAQ

How much does X Premium cost?

Basic Premium is around $8 a month billed monthly, less when billed annually. Premium+ costs more. Prices vary by country.

Do I need X Premium to make money on X?

Yes. An active paid Premium or Premium+ subscription is a hard requirement for Creator Revenue Sharing, and payouts stop if it lapses.

How many impressions do I need to pay for X Premium?

Roughly 1 million a month with a US-heavy, Premium-dense audience, or 4 million or more with a general global audience. For audiences concentrated in low-CPM regions it can take 8 million or more.

Is Premium+ worth it for creators?

Only once your basic-tier payouts comfortably exceed the higher subscription cost. The payout weighting is reportedly better but not dramatically so, and upgrading at low volume loses money.

Does X Premium actually increase reach?

Yes, Premium posts receive ranking amplification. For an account working toward the 5 million impression eligibility threshold, this is one of the main practical benefits of subscribing.
