Eligibility check
- 500 followers: metYou are over the follower minimum.
- 5M impressions in 90 days: not metAt this pace you reach about 4.6M per 90 days, so roughly 4 months of this output would qualify.
- Active X Premium subscription: metRequired for payouts, and you have it.
Not eligible yet. All three requirements must be met at the same time.
A range, not a promise. X publishes no rate card, so these bands come from publicly reported creator payouts. How this is calculated.
The threshold is the real barrier, not the payout
The program needs 500 followers, which almost any committed account reaches. It also needs 5M organic impressions across 90 days, which is a different order of difficulty: roughly 1.7M a month, sustained.
For a 2.5K-follower account that means reaching several hundred times its own following every month. That is achievable - the For You feed serves most impressions to non-followers, and replies under large accounts inherit their reach - but it requires either high posting volume or posts that travel well beyond the follower base, consistently, for three months.
So the useful question for a small account is not what the payout would be. It is whether the impressions trajectory clears the gate at all. The eligibility panel in this calculator answers that directly, and for most accounts under a few thousand followers the answer is not yet.
What the numbers look like once you do qualify
An account that just clears the threshold is earning against roughly 1.7M impressions a month. At the mid band for an American audience that is somewhere in the low tens of dollars monthly. For a mixed worldwide audience it is single digits.
Against that sits the mandatory Premium subscription at around eight dollars a month. A newly eligible small account with a non-US audience can quite easily be net negative on the program, which is not a failure of the account but a structural feature of how the rates are set.
The payout threshold sharpens this further. Balances are only released once they clear the program minimum, recently about ten dollars, and anything below it rolls into the next cycle. An account earning a few dollars a month is therefore paid every few months rather than monthly, while the subscription is charged on schedule throughout.
The honest framing is that Creator Revenue Sharing at this size is a few dollars of validation rather than income. Accounts that treat it as the goal tend to be disappointed; accounts that treat it as a by-product of building reach they use for something else tend not to be.
Where the leverage actually is for small accounts
Replies under large accounts are the highest-leverage move available, because a reply that ranks well inherits the reach of a thread with orders of magnitude more attention than your own timeline has. This is the most reliable route from a few thousand followers to seven-figure monthly impressions.
Volume matters more at this size than polish. Impressions scale with posts published, and small accounts have no established distribution to protect, so the cost of a post that does not land is close to zero. Cadence is the variable with the clearest relationship to reach in the model for a reason.
And pick the niche deliberately if you have a choice. A Premium-dense topic multiplies the rate by a meaningful factor at identical reach, which at small scale is the difference between covering the subscription and not.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does a small X account earn?
- An account that has just cleared the 5M impressions threshold earns low tens of dollars a month with an American audience and single digits with a mixed worldwide one, before the cost of the mandatory Premium subscription.
- Can you make money on X with under 1,000 followers?
- In principle, since the follower minimum is only 500. In practice the 5M impressions in 90 days requirement is very hard to sustain at that size unless a large share of your reach comes from replies under much bigger accounts.
- Is X monetization worth it for a small account?
- Financially, often not - the payout can sit below the cost of the Premium subscription it requires. It becomes worthwhile as reach grows, and the other routes X offers tend to clear more at small audience sizes.
- What is the fastest way for a small account to hit the threshold?
- Replying under large accounts in your niche, at volume. A well-ranked reply inherits the reach of the thread it sits in, which is the only mechanism that reliably produces millions of monthly impressions from a small following.
