Do You Need Verified Followers to Monetize on X?

No - X (Twitter) requires 500 followers of any kind, not 500 verified ones. But verified engagement is what the payout is actually calculated from, which is where the confusion comes from.

Updated 2026-10-01 · 5 min read

Short answer: no. X (formerly Twitter) requires 500 followers to qualify for Creator Revenue Sharing, and they do not need to be verified. Any 500 followers count — Premium subscribers, free accounts, dormant accounts, whoever follows you.

But the question gets asked constantly, and the instinct behind it is half right in a way worth untangling. Verification does not matter for qualifying. It matters enormously for what you get paid. Those are two different gates, and conflating them is why so much advice on this is wrong in both directions.

The requirement: 500 followers, unqualified

As of September 2026 the published requirements are:

Requirement Threshold Does verification matter?
Followers 500 No — any followers count
Impressions 5,000,000 in 90 days No — all impressions count
Premium subscription Active and paid Yours, not your followers'

The only verification in that table is your own. You must be a paying Premium subscriber to be enrolled; your audience can be entirely unsubscribed and you will still qualify. The full list, including the age and Stripe conditions, is in X monetization requirements.

Check all three against your own numbers with the eligibility checker.

Where the confusion comes from

Three separate things have fed this, and all three are real.

X markets the rate in "verified impressions". X's own promotional figures have been quoted as roughly $8 to $12 per million verified impressions — meaning views from Premium subscribers. Creators read "verified" in a sentence about getting paid and reasonably conclude that verified followers are a requirement. They are not a requirement; they are the thing being counted once you are already in.

The payout genuinely depends on verified engagement. Since October 2024, Creator Revenue Sharing pays based on how much Premium subscribers engage with your content, not on advertising or raw reach — see Creator Revenue Sharing, explained. So verified accounts really are where the money comes from. Just not where the eligibility comes from.

The thresholds have changed before. The program's requirements have been revised more than once since July 2023, and older guides describing different numbers are still indexed. Treat any figure quoted without a date — including the ones here, which are as of September 2026 — as needing a check against X's own help pages.

The part that is true: verified engagement sets your rate

Having established that verified followers are not a requirement, here is why you should care about them anyway.

Two accounts can cross the 500-follower line on the same day, generate identical impressions, and be paid an order of magnitude apart. The variable is what share of the people engaging are paying Premium subscribers. Creator reports put Premium density somewhere in the 5% to 20% range depending on niche, and the spread between those ends is most of the difference between a payout worth having and one that never clears the threshold.

This is why niche shows up in every estimate on this site. Crypto, finance, AI, tech and political commentary audiences are unusually dense with people who already pay for a blue check — worth a 1.6x multiplier in the model. General-interest, fandom and meme audiences get 0.75x. Same impressions, more than a twofold swing, entirely from who is doing the engaging.

So the useful reframing of "how many verified followers do I need" is: none to qualify, and as many as possible thereafter. Not because a counter somewhere needs to reach a number, but because they are the only followers the payout formula can see.

What this means practically

Do not buy followers, verified or otherwise. Purchased accounts do not engage, and engagement is the entire payout basis. They will move you past 500 and contribute nothing afterwards — while putting your account at risk under X's platform rules.

Do not chase the 500 number at all, really. It is the easiest of the three requirements by a wide margin. The one that actually gates people is 5 million impressions in 90 days, which is roughly 55,000 a day sustained. If you are worried about qualifying, that is the number to worry about — how to get monetized on X works through the sequence.

Do pay attention to who replies to you. Under the current model, a reply from a Premium subscriber is the unit of value. Posting into a niche where those people already congregate does more for your payout than any follower milestone.

FAQ

How many verified followers do I need on X to monetize?

None. X requires 500 followers to qualify for Creator Revenue Sharing and they do not need to be verified or Premium subscribers. The only subscription that matters for eligibility is your own.

Do my followers need X Premium for me to get paid?

Not to qualify. But the payout is calculated from engagement by verified Premium subscribers, so an audience with more of them earns substantially more at identical impressions. Premium density in a normal audience runs roughly 5% to 20% depending on niche.

What are the actual follower requirements for X monetization?

500 followers of any kind, alongside 5 million impressions across 90 days and an active paid Premium subscription. All three must hold at the same time, as of September 2026.

Does buying followers help with X monetization?

No. Bought accounts do not engage, and engagement from Premium subscribers is what the payout is based on, so they add nothing after the 500 threshold. They also risk enforcement under X's rules.

Why do I need Premium if my followers do not?

Premium is how X gates the creator programme itself — it is the subscription that makes you eligible to be paid. Whether it pays for itself at your size is a separate question, covered in is X Premium worth it.

Did Twitter require verified followers?

Twitter is now X, and the current programme does not require verified followers. The requirements have been revised more than once since the July 2023 launch, so older guides quoting different thresholds are describing earlier versions of the rules.
