X Creator Revenue Sharing, Explained (2026)
What X Creator Revenue Sharing actually is, how the payout formula changed in October 2024, and why two accounts with identical impressions get paid completely different amounts.

X Creator Revenue Sharing pays creators a share of platform revenue based on how much verified Premium subscribers engage with their content. It launched in July 2023, and in October 2024 the payout basis was changed from advertising shown in replies to engagement from Premium users. That change is why so much advice written before 2025 is now wrong.
The original model (July 2023 – October 2024)
When the program launched, the logic was straightforward: X served ads in the reply threads under your posts, and you received a cut of the revenue from those ads.
This created a specific and widely criticised incentive. What paid was replies, so the optimal strategy was to provoke arguments. Rage bait, deliberately wrong takes and engagement farming were not side effects of the model — they were the model working as designed.
The current model (October 2024 – present)
X replaced the ads-in-replies basis with one built on engagement from Premium subscribers. Instead of counting ad impressions under your posts, the payout is driven by how much users who pay for Premium interact with your content.
The stated goal was to reward content people actually value rather than content that generates the most argument. Whether it achieved that is debatable. What is not debatable is the mechanical consequence: your payout now depends on the composition of your audience, not just its size.
Why identical impressions produce different payouts
This is the single most important thing to understand about the program.
Consider two accounts, each with 20 million impressions in a month:
- Account A posts crypto market analysis. Its audience is largely American, and a substantial share pay for Premium because they use X professionally. Its effective rate might be $6 to $10 per million impressions. Monthly payout: roughly $120 to $200.
- Account B posts football highlights to a global audience, mostly younger, mostly not subscribed to anything. Its effective rate might be $0.50 to $1.50 per million. Monthly payout: roughly $10 to $30.
Same reach. Roughly a 10x difference in income. Neither account did anything wrong.
X has quoted marketing figures around $8 to $12 per million verified impressions. Since Premium users are commonly somewhere between 5% and 20% of any normal audience, the rate against total impressions lands far lower — in practice $0.50 to $10 per million, with most accounts between $1 and $3.
What the program pays for now
Based on creator reports since the October 2024 change:
- Replies from Premium accounts appear to carry the most weight. Conversation depth beats passive reach.
- Premium density of your niche is the strongest structural factor. Finance, crypto, AI, tech and US politics audiences contain far more subscribers than general-interest ones.
- Audience geography still tracks advertiser value, so US and Western European audiences pay considerably more.
- Format matters — video and images hold attention and generate more qualifying engagement per impression than link posts.
What it does not pay for
- Impressions on promoted or paid-amplified posts.
- Views from logged-out users, which are numerous and worth nothing to the payout.
- Engagement from non-Premium accounts, in the sense that it does not directly drive revenue share — though it does drive distribution, which reaches Premium users indirectly.
How it compares with the rest of X's creator tools
Revenue sharing is one of several monetization paths, and for most mid-sized accounts it is not the largest one:
| Path | What it is | Typical scale |
|---|---|---|
| Creator Revenue Sharing | Share of platform revenue from Premium engagement | $10 – $2,000/mo for most accounts |
| Subscriptions | Followers pay you monthly for exclusive posts | Highly variable; can exceed revenue share |
| Tips | One-off payments from followers | Small and sporadic |
| Direct sponsorship | Brands pay you directly | Usually the largest, entirely off-platform |
Most creators earning meaningful income from X are using the platform's reach to sell something else. Revenue sharing is best understood as a subsidy for doing that, not a salary.
Will the formula change again?
Almost certainly. It has already changed once substantively, and X has adjusted weightings without announcement between those changes. Any model of X earnings — including ours — has to be recalibrated rather than fixed, which is why this site collects real payout reports from creators instead of relying on a static formula.
FAQ
What is X Creator Revenue Sharing?
A program that pays creators a share of platform revenue based on how much verified Premium subscribers engage with their content. It requires 500 followers, 5 million impressions in 90 days, and an active Premium subscription.
How did X revenue sharing change in October 2024?
It moved from paying creators for advertising shown in the replies to their posts, to paying based on engagement from Premium subscribers. This shifted the incentive away from reply-bait and made audience composition the dominant factor in payouts.
Why do two accounts with the same impressions earn different amounts?
Because the payout is driven by engagement from paying Premium subscribers, not by raw views. An audience that is American and Premium-dense can be worth ten times a global, general-interest audience at identical reach.
Is X Creator Revenue Sharing worth it?
For most accounts it covers the Premium subscription and not much more. It becomes meaningful above roughly 10 million impressions a month, or sooner if your audience is US-heavy and in a Premium-dense niche.
Does X revenue sharing pay for video views?
Video is not paid separately, but it typically generates more qualifying engagement per impression than text or link posts, so it tends to improve your effective rate.
